The Power of Encouragement: What a Young Elvis Tribute Artist Taught Me About Confidence, Passion, and Parenting

Every now and then, you meet someone who reminds you what passion truly looks like. For me, that someone is a young upcoming star named Dev Sekar.
I’ve had the privilege of watching Dev perform several times, and each time I walk away more inspired than before. Dev doesn’t just “do” an Elvis tribute — he lives it. He studies Elvis’ songs, his movies, his mannerisms… he knows the history, the style, the tone. You can see in his eyes that this isn’t just entertainment. This is his dream. And he’s bold enough to chase it.
What Dev Represents for All of Us
Watching this young man command a stage with confidence and joy made me think about something bigger: What would happen if more kids were given that level of belief, support, and opportunity?
Today’s world can feel chaotic — nonstop noise, distractions, expectations. Many young people grow up unsure of their direction, their identity, or their purpose. But passion is born early. Dreams start small. And confidence is built through the encouragement of the people around them.
Dev has that spark. But more importantly, he has the support that allows him to bring that spark to life.
The Lesson for Parents, Leaders, and Anyone Who Influences Young People
We all have a responsibility — as parents, mentors, and community leaders — to cultivate the gifts we see in the next generation.
Here’s what Dev reminded me:
✔ Confidence is built, not born.
No child starts out knowing they can command a room. It comes from repeated affirmation, practice, and opportunities.
✔ Passion needs a pathway.
Dev didn’t just love Elvis — he studied him. He invested the time. And someone in his life gave him the room to pursue that interest.
✔ Support changes everything.
When a young person feels believed in, they rise. They try harder. They grow faster. They become someone they didn’t even know they could be.
✔ Opportunities create identity.
A stage, a mic, a chance… those moments shape a young person’s belief in who they can become.
Why This Inspired Me Personally
As someone who has coached, mentored, and worked with countless individuals over the years, I’ve seen firsthand the difference between talent and belief. Talent alone doesn’t win. Passion alone isn’t enough.
But belief — that changes everything.
And seeing Dev reminded me that our youth need more examples like him: Young people brave enough to dream… and adults committed enough to support those dreams.
To Dev: Keep Going
Dev, if you see this — keep shining. Keep practicing. Keep studying the music and the legend that inspires you. You never know whose life you’re impacting simply by showing up with courage and passion.
And to the parents, leaders, and mentors out there: Let’s keep investing in our youth. Let’s keep creating environments where confidence is built, passions are nurtured, and dreams are possible.
Because the next generation isn’t lacking talent… They’re just waiting for permission to believe in themselves.
