The GO-GETTER Principles

Text:

As a fun and memorable way to remember key success traits, let’s break down the word “GO-GETTER” itself. Each letter stands for a principle to guide your mindset and actions:

  • G – Grit: Stick with it, even when things get tough or tedious. Success often comes from the boring, persistent work that many people avoid. Grit means you don’t give up at the first (or fifth or fiftieth) obstacle. You understand that big results are the compound interest of small actions done consistently over time.
  • O – Ownership: Take full responsibility for your outcomes. No blaming others, no excuses. If something doesn’t go as planned, you own the result and the next step. By claiming ownership, you empower yourself to also own the solutions and adjustments. This is your journey—steer it consciously.
  • G – Growth: View everything as an opportunity to learn. Wins are great for confidence, but setbacks are your best teachers. Adopting a growth mindset (believing your abilities can be developed through effort and learning) turns each challenge or failure into valuable data. Ask, “What is this teaching me? How can I grow from this?”
  •  E – Execution: Ideas are worthless without action. Focus on the next actionable step—the smallest shippable unit of work—and put it on the calendar. Then deliver on it. Planning has its place, but progress comes from execution. A go-getter is a doer, not just a thinker.
  • T – Tenacity: Outlast the dip. There will be phases where progress is slow or invisible, when most people would quit. Decide now that you will not quit in the middle. Be the one who keeps going when others have packed up. Tenacity is often the only trait separating the eventual success story from the almost-had-it crowd.
  • T – Time Mastery: Time is your most precious resource. Mastering it means focusing on what matters and guarding against distractions. Protect your mornings or your most productive hours fiercely—don’t squander them on emails or social media. Learn to say “no” to commitments that don’t align with your goals. Use tools or routines to make the most of each day, because consistency over time yields huge results.
  • E – Energy: You are the engine of your venture, and your energy is the fuel. Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. That means getting enough sleep, eating foods that give you sustained energy, exercising to keep your body and mind strong, and taking care of your mental health through mindfulness or breaks. High performers treat their body like a high-performance machine. You can’t run a marathon on an empty tank; entrepreneurship is a marathon, so fuel up accordingly.
  • R – Relationships: Opportunity travels through people. No one succeeds alone. Be the person others trust and want to work with. Build a network of mentors, peers, partners, and supporters. We’ll dive deeper into this in a later chapter, but remember that every connection could open a door. Treat people with respect, deliver value before you ask for any, and surround yourself with others who uplift and challenge you.

Keep these GO-GETTER principles in mind as guiding lights. When in doubt or faced with a tough decision, think of which principle applies.

Feeling discouraged? Tap into Grit.

Tempted to blame circumstances? Recall Ownership.

Facing a setback? Embrace Growth.

Overwhelmed by ideas? Choose Execution.

In a slump? Remember Tenacity.

Distracted? Practice Time Mastery.

Burnt out? Refuel your Energy.

Feeling isolated? Strengthen Relationships.

These traits will not only help you build a thriving business, but also a strong character that can weather any storm.
